The Gift of Te Kapowai: Comfort in a Little Dragonfly

Hospice West Auckland provides care that extends far beyond medical support, reaching into the heart of a family’s journey. One of the most beautiful examples of this compassionate care is Te Kapowai—a delicate, handcrafted dragonfly given to families as a keepsake when a loved one passes.

Te Kapowai, the Māori name for dragonfly, symbolises the enduring spirit and transformation. It’s a small, tangible reminder that while physical form changes, the essence of the person remains, flying free.

These meaningful keepsakes are lovingly and tirelessly made by Hospice’s incredible team of volunteers. It takes tremendous care and patience to craft each dragonfly, ensuring every family receives a token of comfort that is as unique and precious as the person they are remembering.

Our team was recently privileged to join in this meaningful process, dedicating an afternoon to creating a handful of these beautiful dragonflies for Hospice West Auckland. It was a moving experience to contribute to such a profound act of love and remembrance, reinforcing our deep admiration for the volunteers who perform this service daily.

These small acts of kindness, like the gift of Te Kapowai, embody the holistic support that makes Hospice West Auckland so invaluable to our community.
